Going from a decades old power drill to Milwaukee’s latest and greatest is probably what a racer from the 50's would feel like with a set of modern race slicks. I guess I’m now locked into a brand?
It’s going to be nice not having to charge my drill every 5 minutes after it stops cutting through thin plastic, etc.

Nice. Milwaukee is a good brand.

My old Craftsman is giving out. I have to recharge the batteries every 2 minutes. I do have a cordless Milwaukee grinder just like that with 2x M18 batteries. Might as well get the drill so I have extra batteries :D

Love the Milwaukee. Have the drill and flash light both are 5 year old 18v lithium and still work like new. You will enjoy these big time! Congrats

i recently bought a 1/2 cordless impact Milwaukee.

How do you like it? That may be my next buy

Gotta say, the drill feels FANTASTIC in hand.

So I’ve heard! Should be more than enough for mid-level automotive and home improvement work

Thats what I need. My craftsman is so top heavy

You can still jump up to a Panasonic, probably the best cordless drills made.

Milwaukee is the
boutique
brand. Pretty much unimpeachable as far as I know.

I switched over to the Milwaukee tools 3-4 years ago and love them. Especially the fuel stuff. Though I don’t have too many fuel tools yet. That’s all I buy now when I want to expand my collection. Even my original set with the first batteries are still going strong after 3-4 years I’ve had them.

I hear ya. The old Makita I had must have put 70% of the weight in the head. This new drill is much more ergonomic, and balanced great.

Cordless tools are handy for sure. I’m more of a yellow guy (18V Dewalt) but the red is supposed to be very good as well! Most anything is an improvement over an old drill with a junk battery.

I want the ratchet. My friends that have used it have said good things about it.

I do too. That was the only Milwaukee tool I’d used previously and I loved it

I gotta stop buying corded tools. They just don’t get used much when I have to deal with running two extension cords from my condo just to reach my car

Its fantastic!
![]() 04/21/2018 at 23:04 |

They all have their highs and lows. Milwaukee’s circle saws have poor sightlines, for example. I love the Milwaukee stuff I have though. The stuff they do well, they do really well. This is a good set.

Wow! That pistol grip Makita takes me back!! That was THE cordless drill back in the day. That day was 25 years ago though :)
I have a bunch of the compact 12 volt Milwaukee tools that I’ve been very happy with. I went back and forth between getting a Dewalt or a Milwaukee set for my big cordless drill, as I was very disappointed in the brushless Makita set I had for a while. I ultimately chose Dewalt because I got a screaming deal on them. I don’t think I could’ve gone wrong either way. That’s a really nice bit of kit you got there.

Those Makitas are fucking warriors tho. Probably the best drill around our house—and the most likely to have functioning batteries—is one of those

I recently bought the Dewalt version. It’s a game changer for sure, makes swapping wheels SO much easier!

When you get a house, you should get a 1/4" impact driver if your going to do any projects that involve driving in screws. It makes it about a kajillion times easier!

My bought the Milwaukee drill and impact wrench set for me several years ago. They’ve been fantastic. One of the batteries just died. The replacement from the manufacturer is $69, but I found one with a higher watt-hour rating for just $30.

If you don’t trust third-party replacements, t he originals are available from Amazon for just a few bucks more.

Haha I was wondering if anyone would recognize it! Found it in my grandpa’s shop about ten years ago and it served as a decent screw gun ever since. But boy is it top heavy!!
The 12v ratchet is what swayed me towards red. That tool is amazing

I’m sure if I found a new battery for it it would soldier on for another decade or two. I might just do that for a backup... But man is it heavy

Tool fairy > all other fairies.
![]() 04/21/2018 at 23:27 |

It would for sure. Upon closer inspection, while ours uses the same batteries, it’s even older... so...
I think it’s one of their first ones. No variable speed, the trigger is a really heavy—and loud—detent, and it’s a lot narrower at the gland end. Still does drill things though, and well.

I can’t find fault with that statement

havent had a chance to use it yet but my mechanic friend uses his everyday and loves it.

My dad had that exact one for years. I bought one of the later versions with a keyless chuck (hot stuff back then!) when I was 15. When DeWalt dropped their 18volt cordless line in the late 90's, every cordless drill that came before it was instantly obsolete. It’s amazing how much better cordless tools have gotten in the last 5 years or so.

I’m conflicted. I’ve got the Dewalt 20V universe going on at home. But work tools are 20V Milwaukee... Milwaukee’s one handed sawzall is the greatest thing ever!
![]() 04/22/2018 at 10:12 |
|
I need to buy a power drill with a 1/2-inch chuck that the variable speed truly starts at zero rpm. I bought a DeWalt drill but it jerks when it starts to like 150 rpm.
![]() 04/22/2018 at 10:20 |

When I worked construction, we had Dewalt 18V tools (the lithium ones were still years away) and they got the ever-living shit beaten out of them, batteries run flat and charged hot, etc. Never had an issue - thus I went with that line of tools at home. I’ve had most of the tools and batteries 6 or 7 years now and have zero issues - including battery life (one non-XRP battery has just recently started to show its age a bit, but it just gets used on a flashlight).
![]() 04/22/2018 at 10:22 |
|
They have their role - for example I have a battery sawzall that works well, but then you pick up a real corded one and it becomes a toy. For parking lot work though, nothing beats cordless

Cordless or corded?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 00:43 |
|
Corded.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 09:43 |
|
I’d go with an older used Milwaukee then. While cordless tools keep getting better and better, a lot of new corded tools are hot piles of garbage. I picked up this Milwaukee Magnum off CL for $70. These old ones cost a freaking fortune when they were new, and we’re thusly built to last and serviceable. Mine actually needs new brushes right now, but once that’s done it will be back to having enough torque to break your wrist, if you aren’t careful. Starts at 0 RPM, and will crawl if that’s what you want it to do.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 13:37 |
|
Yes, I want it to crawl with lots of torque, though that particular one may be a bit more than I need. What’s the amperage on that one?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 13:46 |
|
The ID plate is too worn for me to know. It’s a biggun. There are smaller versions. I have a 3/8" non-hammer Milwaukee drill that my dad bought new in ‘79. It’s quite the little ass-kicker as well. They’re out there, because these basically never get thrown away, so they really aren’t that hard to find.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 13:53 |
|
Crawl: I have an older 18V DeWalt that I use in low gear so I can crawl with it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 13:58 |
|
We’ll roll the dice on this one:
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:01 |
|
That should do you well. Worst case scenario, it needs a new switch or brushes.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:46 |
|
I just hope it’ll crawl with torque. I only need to use it rarely.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:50 |
|
Both of my old Milwaukee drills will do that, so you should be good.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:54 |
|
But that herky-jerky in the DeWalt drill caused me to break drill bits.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:54 |
|
If it ain’t broke, I won’t fix it, but a little bit of renovating might be fun.

I’m actually looking forward to replacing the brushes and fixing that drill back up. I’ve never done that before, so it’ll be a fun challenge.
